Here is a detailed analysis of how Fight End Methods were changing through the years.
Check break down of Submission and Decision subtypes.
Fight End Methods in MMA can generally be categorized into: " Submissions " KO and TKO " Decisions " Draw
There are other Methods (like No Contest or DQ), but they are not that prevalent.
Following pie charts are giving a high level view of how Fight End percentage was changing for each Method Type in different time periods.
This represents percentage of all fights that happened in that period.

In the early years submissions were ending more them half of all fights. These days (last two years) submissions and TKO/KO are around 1/3. Here is the same set of pie charts, but just for fights in UFC.
UFC fights represent less then 2% of all MMA fights, but they are the most dominant MMA organization.
Compared to previous chart we can see that UFC had much less submissions and almost no draws.
The beginning of this decade was the time when almost half of UFC fights were ended with TKO/KO.
Following graph is better to analyze Fight End Method trends over years.

It is a clear trend of having less submissions and more KO/TKO over years.
They are now both sliding down slowly and that is because of more and more fights ending in the decision. Those trends are not that obvious on the same type of chart for UFC fights.
In first few years UFC was dominated by submission artists (Royce Gracie), but later fighters learned how to defend submissions and they went under 30%. Important fact is that in 2009 UFC has 45% fights finished in Decision.
Now let's dig deeper and break down Submissions and Decisions into subtypes. Submissions are broken down into Chokes and Locks and Decisions into Unanimous and Split.

Interesting facts from this graph: - Submission Locks were in 90's over 20% of fight ends, but today they are less then 10%. - Chokes are steadily going up. - KO's were always around 8%. - Unanimous Decisions are suddenly jumping to 20% of all fights.
Again, those trends are not that observable on same graph with UFC fights.
