When we are talking about All Time Rankings, the two most important factors are:
- Who were the fighter’s opponents?
- How was the fighter ranked historically?
For these two factors, we developed numerical indexes that allow us to compare the overall careers of different fighters.
Index = is the number used to indicate a magnitude of a measure. We scale indexes to levels that allow for them to be summed up.
There are also some other fighter statistics that should be considered for this discussion. We can group all of the other factors into the Other Fighter Stat index group.
This would give us 3 groups of indexes that we can sum up into one comprehensive score – All Time Total (ATT) .
ATT is time, weight and promotion independent. It allows for a comparison of fighters from different generations and weight categories.
AllTimeTotal includes these 3 index groups in its calculations:
All Time Total = Opponents + Historical Quarterly Rankings + Other Fighter Stats
For a fighter’s opponents, we must define the following:
- What were his wins (the opponent's quality for the fights that he won)?
- How strong were his overall opponents (all fights)?
To describe opponents, we developed two numeric indexes:
iOpponentWin – this index is design to show who has more wins over quality Opponents.
iOpponentAll – this index describes the quality of All Opponents.
These two indexes change only when the fighter has new fights.
The value of the iOpponentWin index is changed only when the fighter has a new win.
Opponent Quality is defined the moment before the time of the fight.
Historical Quarterly Rankings
This group of indexes is calculated at the end of each historical quarter (a 3 month period).
Fighters with good quarter-end rankings will have their quarterly indexes increase, even when they are not fighting.
We have developed 3 major indexes:
iHistQtrSum – this is a summary index that shows how a high fighter was ranked in each quarter.
iHistQtrBest - represents a fighter's highest achievements in terms of best quarter-end scores and rankings.
iHistQtrDominance - shows how dominant the top fighters were in each quarter.
Other Fighter Stats
There are a lot of other factors that should be considered for All Time Rankings. Those factors might be less important, but they still need to be reflected in the calculation.
A few years ago we developed a big bucket index that encompassed all of the other factors. That index is called Basic Career Score (BasicCarScr).
As of late, we have some of the factors from BasicCarScr shown as separate indexes. We still use this score for calculating ATT, but BasicCarScr has become less relevant.
The main components here are:
BasicCarScr – Basic Career Score uses fights from an entire career, but it doesn't take into consideration the time period in which each fight happened. This score is composed of many generic measures using basic calculations. This is the first score that we re-calculate every week.
ChampPts – Championship Points represents the quantity and levels of championship fights for each fighter.
FightPctMark – this index is a combination of multiple fight related statistics including: win percentage, finish rate, close and dominant fights.
The final formula for AllTimeTotal includes, which includes all 8 major indexes, is as follows:
AllTimeTotal = iOpponentWin + iOpponentAll + iHistQtrSum + iHistQtrBest + iHistQtrDominance + BasicCarScr + ChampPts + FightPctMark
Here is how each major index is calculated:
iOpponentAll = isOppRkP4p + isOppRkCtg + isOppCSR + iaOppCSR + iOppBest
isOppRkP4p – is an indexed sum that describes P4P rankings for all opponents at the time of a fight
isOppRkCtg – is an indexed sum that describes the Category (divisional) rankings of all opponents
isOppCSR – is an index that uses the sum of Current Scores and Current Ratings for all Opponents at the time of a fight.
iaOppCSR – is an index based on the average Opponent Score (1 to 1000) and Opponent Rating (1 to 35).
iOppBest – is an index based on the best rankings and scores from all opponents.
iOpponentWin = isWOppRkP4p + isWOppRkCtg + isWOppCSR + iaWOppCSR + iWinOppBest
It uses the same components as iOpponentAll, but this time it considers only Opponents from fights that the Fighter won.
iHistQtrSum = isHFRkP4p + isHFRkCtg + isHFCurScr
iHistQtrSum is a summary index calculated from the Historical Fighter (Quarterly) Rankings and Historical Current Scores.
It is based on the number of quarters from historical rankings. Here are a few examples for quarterly counts:
- The number of quarters in which a fighter is ranked in the Pound for Pound rankings as: top1P4P, top3P4P, top5P4P, …
- The number of quarters in which a fighter is ranked in the Category rankings as: top1Ctg, top3Ctg, top5Ctg, …
- The number of quarters in which a fighter's Current Score is more than: 880 points, 800 points, 700 points, …
iHistQtrBest = bestHFRk + maxHFScr
bestHFRk – the Best Historical Fighter Rankings combines the best P4P and Category rankings achieved in the career.
maxHFScr – the Maximum Histortical Fighter Score is a combination of different maximum scores (best Current Score, biggest WinStreak, best Rating, and the best MidTerm Score).
The points values in BestRankings and MaxScore represents a fighter's highest achievements. This score can never decrease.
iHistQtrDominance - This is a historical score which shows the difference between dominant fighters and those ranked beneath them, by calculating the difference in Current Score for each quarter. It's not the same when you are just a few points or a hundred points ahead of the fighters ranked below you. This is calculated for each quarter and only for the top ranked fighters.
ChampPoints represents the level of the championship fights in which the fighter was involved. Significantly less points are awarded to the fighter that loses in a championship bout.
FightPctMark = WinPct + (pctWinFinish + pctAllFtFinish)/4 + FtTopOppBigEvt + sizeDiff + mWrongClose + mDominExcit/5
- WinPct - a fighter's win percentage
- pctWinFinish - the finish rate for Wins.
- pctAllFtFinish- the finish rate when all of the fights are included.
- FtTopOppBigEvt - the score for fights with Top Opponents and in Big Events.
- sizeDiff – plus/minus points for the size (weight) difference.
- mWrongClose – sum of all Fight Marks where we had a close fight or something was deemed "wrong" with the result
- mDominExcit – sum of all Fight Marks when the fighter was dominant or had exciting finish.
